COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER and EVENTS COORDINATOR
DEFINITION OF WORK
Work involves developing, updating and implementing a communications and advocacy plan for the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) and for coordinating NLAC events. Work requires considerable initiative and is performed independently under the general guidance of the Executive Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate, organize, oversee and execute internal and external communication projects that are tailored respectively to the Newfoundland and Labrador arts community and to the general public.
- Prepare media advisories and new releases.
- Develop and implement a wide-ranging on-line strategy that is thoughtfully responsive to the changing landscape of web-based communications, social media and emerging digital platforms for communication.
- Edit and update the NLAC website and write the bi-weekly feature project.
- Be proactive in exploring ways to raise the profile of the NLAC.
- Work to promote the mandate of the NLAC and to build awareness of NLAC programs, particularly in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Work to raise the profile of the NLAC Arts Awards in the wider community.
- Liaise with media by telephone or in person. Liaise with government officials for joint communication initiatives and with outside organizations regarding NLAC special events.
- Monitor media for relevant news and advise the Executive Director on a daily basis.
- Prepare speaking notes and briefing notes for the Executive Director and the Board.
- Prepare media kits, arrange itineraries, and escort journalists, photographers and other media and visitors.
- Integrate communications planning in all of the Arts Council activities; assist with news conference organization; develop support materials for events, announcements and other communications activities; answer media calls and/or arrange interviews and provide advice on media interviews.
- Develop and implement evaluative metrics to assess the success of the NLAC’s communications projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from college or university with a major in English, Professional Writing, Journalism, Communications or Public Relations preferred.
- Minimum of three years experience in communications planning and delivery and event coordination. Experience working with non-profit cultural organizations.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Office Environment.
- Ability to both work effectively on your own and as part of a team.
- Ability to work to frequent deadlines.
- Ability to form and maintain relationships through teamwork and networking.
- Knowledge of the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.
The successful candidate will serve a 6 month probationary period before confirmation in appointment.
Salary: $49,850 plus benefits and pension per annum.
