June 13, 2011, St. John’s, NL The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) has awarded $125,000 to 14 professional festivals from across the province through its Professional Festivals Program (PFP).
The Professional Festivals Program supports festivals of all artistic disciplines. Grants help support costs related to artist fees, technical costs, venue rental, administration costs, workshop sessions and travel expenses.
The NLAC receives an annual contribution of $2.1 million from the Provincial Government for granting programs, program delivery, operations, and communications.
Some of the festivals that have received funding this session include the New World Theatre Festival (Cupids), the Tramore Festival of the Arts (Cuslett), and Writers at Woody Point.
“The festivals supported by this program represent a wide range of artistic experiences,”says NLAC executive director Reg Winsor. “Film, opera, writing, theatre, storytelling…the list goes on. But no matter what the art form, they all provide a venue for audiences and artists, from both home and away, to come together enjoy the flourishing arts scene that our province is known for. I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy these wonderful festivals.”
The next application deadline for the Professional Festivals Program is February 15, 2012 for festivals or series starting after April 15, 2012. Applications are reviewed by a multidisciplinary peer assessment committee.

The NLAC is a non-profit Crown agency created in 1980 by The Arts Council Act. Its mission is to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Council is governed by a volunteer board of 13 appointed by government, reflecting regional representation of the province. This includes 10 professional artists who provide sectoral representation of the arts community; one community representative (with an interest in the arts); one business representative (with an interest in the arts); and one representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation (non-voting). The NLAC receives an annual grant from the Province to support a variety of granting programs, program delivery, office administration, and communications. It also seeks support from the public and private sector. It supports the following artistic disciplines: dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, and writing.

The Cape St. Mary’s Performance Series features music, storytelling, readings, sounds, and visual art presented at the Interpretation Centre at Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve. This year’s series will include performances by writer Michael Crummey, traditional singer Rita Young, guitarist Scott Hewlett, visual artist Christopher Newhook, storytellers Tom Power and Dale Jarvis, and many other artists.

Festival 500 is an international, bienneal festival of choral music. Choirs from across North America and around the world participate in this series of concerts, clinics, workshops, masterclasses and performances. Some of this year’s guest artists include: Rajaton (Finland), Bob Chilcott (UK), and Fred Sjoberg (Sweden). Concert highlights include daily World of Music Concerts, Concerts in the Afternoon, and the Grande Finale at Mile One Centre on June 13, 2011.

This is the second season of the New World Theatre Festival, which takes place in Cupids. This year’s program will consist of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Anton Chekhov’s Swan Song, and Moliere’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself. New World Theatre will also create new work directly connected to and inspired by the investigative process of the classical theatre work.

The Nickel Independent Film Festival is a five-day festival of local, Canadian, and international films. This year’s Festival will present films by artists including Jordan Canning, Mark Hoffe, David Freyne, and Sijia Luo. It will also present workshops including: Writing a Short Film, Prep and Production Legally, Film Composer Masterclass, and others.

Opera on the Avalon produces fully-staged operas with professional orchestra for the education and development of its participants, and the enrichment of the host city, St. John’s. This year’s festival will feature productions of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. The Festival features world renowned conductors, directors, and vocal coaches.

The 8th annual St. John’s Storytelling Festival will highlight storytellers from across the province and Canada. Some of the guest artists include Pearl Ann Gooding, Ivan Coyote, Louise Moyes, Alice Lannon, and Jean Hewson. In partnership with a variety of other organizations the Festival will host workshops, concerts, and school visits.

The March Hare is a celebration of words and music. The Festival is presented in Corner Brook, Toronto, Halifax, St. John's, Gander, Deer Lake, and Rocky Harbour. This year’s event will feature 14 shows over a ten-day period in seven cities and towns. It will include 115 presentations featuring 75 artists including: 56 poets, novelists, and short story writers, 54 musical acts, three short plays, and two storytelling performances.

The Tramore Festival of the Arts will host a series of artistic productions and workshops at the Cuslett Arts Center and other locations. These will include plays, storytelling concerts, ballad singing, and old time dances. The 2011 Winterset in Summer Literary Festival will feature the BMO Winterset Award finalists and some of the province's new writers. As well, most of the previous Winterset winners and the 2010 Giller finalists will be participating in this year’s Festival. In addition to regular Festival events, two outreach events are planned: a local event featuring “Writers of Bonavista Bay” in late June, and “Storytelling in Salvage” in August. Also, Winterset in Summer Inc. commissioned Lisa Moore to adapt her novel February to the stage; it will be produced by Rising Tide Theatre and premiered at this year's Festival.

Writers at Woody Point celebrates Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich cultural heritage with a five-day series of readings, music, and art exhibits at the Woody Point Heritage Theatre. This year’s Festival will present performances by artists including Kathleen Winter, Russell Wangersky, Miriam Toews, The Dardanelles, Jim Bryson, Shane Murphy, and many others.
